Will we eat cake? Possibly not....

I am often wooed by pretty pictures in magazines. The glossy pages and seemingly simple do-it-yourself instructions give me a false sense of optimism. Yes! I can do this!
Of course the spread of cakes in my Real Simple magazine planted a seed. Paul's birthday is right around the corner. I will make a cake! From scratch!
Why would I possibly think this is a good idea? My last pastry experience involved baking a boxed cake for my mother. I was 12 or so. Stirring, stirring, stirring. Why isn't this working? I forgot to add water. Or my ever so delicious chocolate chip cookies. My secret? A tablespoon of salt (the recipe called for a teaspoon).
